Entrepreneurial Spirit
Persia lies in Döbling– in a factory, in total contrast to our understanding of industry: An exotic jewel, a trading place right out of “Thousand and One Nights. “
Johann Zacherl always had something against bugs— namely, a very potent substance which he discovered on his travels to Tiflis. Right away his business sense told him what to do. He abandoned his brass foundry, started his business with “Zacherlin“, as he called it from then on, and built a factory in Vienna to produce this new powder. His business sense told him further to stake his luck on the “Orient” which was so very en vogue in the middle of the 19th century. From then on this simple agent was sold as „Persian Powder“ and the factory– a brick building-- was adorned with an oriental design. Hugo von Wiedenfeld had the idea and the Mayreder brothers drew up a draft. And Johann Zacherl also had his say. “This was a targeted marketing activity, giving the company a true corporate identity,“ recounts Peter Zacherl, who still admires the business sense of his great-grandfather.
„Johann Zacherl always had something against bugs.“
The factory these days is a reminder of times long gone by. Now, artists have set up their workshops here, entrepreneurs have settled in. There are concerts during the summer months and artists are invited „to find answers to this space and to start a dialogue,“ according to Peter Zacherl. Voluntarism is the basis for this art project-- concerts are given for free. Each summer a diverse group of people takes over this very special place, and whoever should need a „Zacherlin,“ just goes to Tiflis—it is a name still known there, even after 150 years.
