Gian-Carlo is a giant, enthroned behind mountains of salami, prosciutto and mortadella and gesturing wildly with both hands and a loud voice-- a genuine Italian who likes to talk about the one thing that means so much to him: good food.

Good food is his subject, illustrated not only by the intensity with which Gian-Carlo talks about it, but especially and foremost by the words he uses: sentences studded with Italian words pouring out of his mouth, as if there were no time to translate them into German. His alimentari has become the meeting point in all questions of taste. But what really gets him going is contemplating, once more, that only brand names seem to matter these days, after which the question of taste is considered.

His tempo of speech constantly increases, his German vocabulary can no longer keep up, and then a colleague joins him-- comprehension completely disappears, and from then on it is Italian only. With a hint of Little Italy, one eats his panini with mortadella, and suddenly knows what Gian-Carlo is talking about– without saying a single word. You nod and enjoy, looking around, only making sure that this little store is filled to the brim with the best Italian delicacies. What a relief!
